Taking time to reflect on the past 19 years of Doctors with a Heart Day, I can only remember warm feelings. Sincere thank yous from everyone that received a helping hand on that day. When I first had a chance to visit with Dr. Duane Schmidt, the inventor of Doctors with a Heart Day, his entire office had a large smile anytime the words were mentioned. Everyone spoke about how this day made them feel as a person, not just a dental provider. That spoke volumes to me and I said right there and then, “We’re gonna do this every year that we’re physically able, and it starts this Fall”. That was in 1995 and to date, we have treated over 5,000 people and performed over $860,000 worth of dental services for our friends and neighbors of the Southern Tier of New York and Northeastern Pennsylvania.

What makes someone want to volunteer?

dentist office in NorwichI’ve thought about that, and honestly I cannot say anything other than- it’s a personal decision. Some people definitely hear a “calling” to do this and others simply feel it’s the right thing to do. I can only say I can’t imagine not doing something with your time, talent or treasure.  It’s probably my favorite day of the year in our practice. We close the business and simply provide services, cut through all the red tape, forms, etc… and gets down to why we are here : To help people.

I’m proud of all the people that have joined in and helped us with their energy, wisdom and passion.  It’s amazing what can be done if everyone does just a little.  Next year can’t come soon enough.

The doctors and staff at Progressive Dental, with 4 office locations (Montrose PA, Kirkwood, Endwell, and Norwich) have been helping our neighbors, families and friends that have fallen on hard times for over 19 years with a day of free dental care: “Doctors with a Heart Day”. Broome, Tioga, Chenango and Susquehanna counties are able to rely on us for this service.
